AVATAR UPDATE AND PLEAD

Amid the heady fannish joy, I'm taking a moment to be srs bsnz.

THE LAST AIRBENDER UPDATE AND URGENT PLEA
So USA Today released photos of both Noah Ringer (Aang) and Dev Patel (Zuko) from the movie.

USA Today caption: The Good Guy:Noah Ringer, 12, already had the look of Aang.

USA Today caption: The bad guy: Slumdog Millionaire's Dev Patel plays Zuko

What, no 'Patel already has the look of Zuko, because all Asians look the same and he's a bad guy anyway, so who cares' comment, Scott Bowles??

Aside from the painfully shoddy production value of these publicity photos, the fail of this is multiple. It's being discussed HERE.

<The racebending.com peeps are urging fans and advocates to contact USAToday/Scott Bowles with emails regarding this 'article'. The details:

"Send comments to letters@usatoday.com. Include name, phone number, city and state for verification."
They prefer articles with 250 words or less. Jumping off ideas:

* The wording of using the "look of Aang"
* Good guy/bad guy coding in the article
* No mention of racefail casting practices
* The production's missteps, including culturally ignorant statements made by the cast and crew

Please, if you have the time, send something in. They can ignore one or two letters, but if two hundred people write them then they may feel like they need to print something. Please don't assume that other people will read this post and write in! And finally, please also ask others to write in as well!

Please please please! And thank you, so so very much. ILU all.

NICKELODEON PRE-VIS: what they actually intended
There has also been a pre-vis video released that showed how Nickelodeon intended the characters to look and it's pretty telling. It's all in 3D with some hastily assembled models and effects - the usual pre-vis teaser pitch.

Screencaps from the video (it keeps being removed from YouTube) have been posted on racebending.com. What strikes me most is Katara. Clearly her 3D version - even with its lack of modeling finesse - is NOT WHITE. The purposely used a darker skin colour and Inuit features.

Here, you don't even need to visit the site if you don't want to, check it out here:

Katara. She's played by a white actor.

Aang. He's played by a white actor.

Zuko. He's being played by a brown actor.

Now it's just a bunch of the same arguments over and over from commenters on the USA Today article, who have done absolutely know research into this movie, bu think they know everything about it and how people are cast and what colourblind means to them. Good times!

Props to the people commenting over at the IJ Scans_Daily, though. Yay!

Gah. It hurts. Like SOOO BAD. SO BAD.
*cries*
Tell me about it. I mean, even with the racefail aside, WHAT IS WITH THAT PRODUCTION VALUE. IT HURTS MY MIND TO THINK THAT THIS IS MEANT TO BE PUBLICITY PHOTO WTFFFFF
IKR? The production value is so... I mean, I've seen COSPLAYERS with better costumes and attention to detail! And that is fire bending? LAWL! It looks like a Zuko BBQ!

I wouldn't want to insult or hurt the actors they've cast but man, the entire flavour of the story has changed from the stills I've seen. I just can't wrap my head around the casting.
Done and done.
*mwah* You're the bestest, as always.
FAIL. BENDING.
Sing it, sister.
I have to admit my intial reaction with seeing the kid as Aang made me go "D'awwwwwww!" He has those pouty lips. Not Aang, but still.

Though... is it just me or does the "arrow" on his forehead look like shaved hair and a bulls-eye? This is looking more and more like Dragonball...
It's true - nothing against the kid at all. But soooo wtf that he was even considered for the role of Aang, never mind the definite choice over so many other more Aang-like kids who got rejected just because they weren't white. :(

Yeah, I'm not quite sure why it looks more like a branding and less like a tattoo? He's like Bullseye's kid cousin or something, lols.
Done! Thanks for the nudge. I made sure to mention the marginally better coverage in Entertainment Weekly, maybe they'll feel bad for being so made of fail.
Yay thank youuu! And yes, such a good point about EW. At least they made mention of the protest. Yayes for them. XD
ZOMFG READ READ READ! http://reyyy.livejournal.com/75754.html

The best bit is suggesting M. Night Shama...rama? should be the Fire Lord. Because he likes to be in his movies. And that might explain why Dev Patel is Zuko.
Haha, at least that rumor isn't true. Someone else is Ozai, iirc.`
But that's the only remotely reasonable reason why Dev Patel would be Zuko.

OH MAN. IF SHAHRUKH KHAN WAS OZAI....
IF SHAHRUKH KHAN WAS OZAI....

FOFL OKAY ACTUALLY THAT WOULD BE KIND OF AWESOME.
I KNOW. FORGET THE REST. IT"S BOLLYWOOD TIME!! *hipshakes*
That's pretty painful. But it reminds me..
More and more movies are being made based on things with established fandoms. I mean, not just obvious things like Terminator/Star Trek/etc, they're making a goddamn 'Hot Wheels' movie. I mean, I expect ruxpin to happen any day now. Honestly.

But less and less content of these films is actually about catering to the fanbase they have, which confuses me. Even aside from the jaw-dropping racial issues here, they make massive changes and I don't think they are even misguided enough to expect the fans to like it, so I don't know why they make them. The difficulty in original ideas? The name/brand recognition? Or just that extra little bit of hype a fanbase is willing to give it?
Whatever it is, they clearly don't care what we think. That picture of "Aang" proves it.
They're running out of original stories to tell that center on a white, heterosexual, cissgendered male. Rather than change things up, they're doing remakes and reboots. So the world changes and there're all these other kind of heroes - but Hollywood is all Same Day, Same sh*te.
I don't mean to argue, but I can't really agree. I do think they're doing remakes, reboots, shitty adaptations... and they are seemingly hell-bent on keeping it white male, but I don't think the facts are related. You make it sound like there aren't more original stories to tell unless they change races. There's room for all races, genders, whatever in good storytelling (:

A disclaimer, though, I'm a white male, and I don't have the first idea what 'cissgendered' means.
http://lmgtfy.com/?q=cisgendered
Well the sass was unnecessary, but thanks. I have been enlightened.
1. Dev Patel looks kind of hot like that, ngl. I realize I'm weird for thinking that, though.

2. This is getting really annoying, you guys. When will the media stop ignoring us?
And is it too much to ask that there still be obvious colour coding of nations? Fine, whatever, black, but srsly how bout DARK ASH GREY AND REDS for fire nation? Or dominantly red/burgundy? And Aang's outfit doesn't look 'air nomad' to me; where is the fantasy?

AUGH! *sits on hands before she types more and gets herself in trouble*
Hey, it's me again. The teaser to the movie has been posted online. I find it amazing that the kid they cast is as graceful with a staff as "The Fat Star Wars Kid" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F-hrsOn8j-w&feature=player_embedded
