I kinda want to cry. WITH ANGER.
AVATAR

From SequentialTart.com - editorial that ties the Last Airbender casting to the Josh Tyler article. Good reading!

An hilarious entry on The Playlist about the casting and about the fans. XD

AND! AND.

PLEASE NOTE - SLAGGING RATHBONE OFF IN THE MTV ARTICLE'S COMMENTS WILL DO NOTHING MORE THAN HAVE PEOPLE DISMISS US AS EASILY AS HE DISMISSES RACIST ISSUES. Please carefully think about what you say if you comment. Focus on the movie-makers, not the actors!

The best part about this is being people who aren't even interested/familiar with in the Avatar series are voicing their anger over this --
Jackson Rathbone Talks Upcoming Last Airbender Film

"Airbender" has already begun to face a bit of controversy over the casting of white actors like Rathbone, Ringer and McCartney to play Asian characters — a concern the actor was quick to dismiss. "I think it's one of those things where I pull my hair up, shave the sides, and I definitely need a tan," he said of the transformation he'll go through to look more like Sokka. "It's one of those things where, hopefully, the audience will suspend disbelief a little bit."(bold is mine)
Okay. Okay.

Okay.
1) I know MTV Films is a producer of this movie.

2) I can clearly see the market they're appealing to, based on the article's comments:
I think all this talk about Asian actors is silly. I'm sorry, but... it's an American show. I never got that they were supposed to be Asian. LOL.Also: *FACE. PALM*
3) I appreciate the fact that MTV has said "the casting of white actors...to play Asian characters" (bold is mine).

So there you have it YET AGAIN, folks. Avatar is Asian. Yeah, not just the food, culture, clothes, mannerisms, beliefs, combat, architecture, music, hairstyles, landmasses, art, writing - THE CHARACTERS ARE ALSO ASIAN. But apparently it's not a big deal to have an all-white main cast?

you can feel my rage?***

I didn't have any hard feelings on Jackson Rathbone either, until I read that quote. What a boneheaded thing to say. I'm just waiting 'til he pulls a Twilight and says he's 1/16th something-or-other to make it all okay. Also, way to alienate your built-in audience.

BAH.

He's not alienating anyone. He's just making it easy for his fans to feel all right with equating ethnicity to a pricey tanning salon appointment.

Just for fun, I just asked my 13 year old son, who is white and, you know, a teenage boy, if he had any particular sense of the racial backgrounds of the characters in this, or what race would rationally be cast in a live-action movie, because he likes a lot of manga/anime-type things so is familiar with the source material. I didn't tell him why I was asking.

After he got done telling me the show is lame (I have no opinion, as I have never seen it), he was all, well, main guy, I would say is Asian-and-white mix, just because of some of the things that come up. The rest of them, I think are like, Eskimo or Inuit or some kind of group that's north Asian. So I would think they would cast at least Japanese or Korean actors or something.

I don't know whether he's right about the north thing, because again, ain't seen it, but my point is, I sort of think if a 13 year old white boy can work out that an Asian cast would make sense in five seconds, the adults doing the casting maybe need some remedial thinking exercises. Heh.

FOFL first off, I loooove that your son is all "THIS SHOW IS LAME" considering he was originally the target market Nickleodeon was aiming for. Proving once again how badly out of touch market researchers can be. *hee* Your boy just cracks me up, I love it!

Second - yeah see? He can easily connect that Asian-based fantasy world = Asian characters; it's not a difficult connection! Though according to some people, even though 99.9% of the show's entirety is Asian/Inuit based, they still don't get what's so wrong about casting all-white actors for the main characters. I just. I wish more kids were like yours, babe.

ha! hes hardly a child actor since he's in his early twenties and he plays a Cullen in the Twilight franchise so hes not going to be hurting for work in the future or face time in the media.

I can understand why he's excited about expanding his acting resume its just to bad he's doing it with this movie...which any person should know takes more then a haircut and a tan to suddenly look Asian. good lord

Yeah, it's too bad he felt he could give an opinion on white-washing Avatar. But, he did - quite blase and dismissive - and now it's there for everyone to read.

NO SRSLY, HOW DO YOUR RLY FEEL?!?!?!

As much as the term makes me cringe, I think the white privilege mindset causes a lot of the "Huh, who's Asian?" comments. I'm happy though, that the Avatar situation hasn't spurred an event like this though: my friend was filming a documentary this past week on cosplayers in Tokyo and filmed a fistfight between a Japanese man and a white guy dressed as an anime character. The Japanese man basically went up to the cosplayer and told him that he was disrespecting Japan's culture and he should leave Japan, then the Japanese guy punched him in the face. Considering we don't get much violence here, that's pretty shocking. The entire situation is pretty shocking actually seeing as most adults, men especially, here are disinclined to let their emotions get the best of them in public.

Wait wait? Did he hit him cause he was Cosplaying or cause he was Cosplaying in an offensive way?

I don't know if its true or not but I have always heard that over in Japan, that most of mainstream Japan dislikes Anime and its fans both its Japananese fans and mainstream American fans. Having to do with the very exaggerated way most Anime deal with Japanese culture.

Or maybe he's being stupid cause the merchandising/commercial department for the Movie are brainwashing him... I'd like to think thats the case cause it really hurts my brain otherwise.

You know, and this is a little off topic but it applies at the end of the statement, I swear, but in the first "interview" session the creators had with M. Night (I think this is where I encountered the statement), M. Night said that it was a weird feeling knowing that the kid they will eventually cast as Aang (or the other characters) is just sitting in class not knowing that he'll become known specifically as Aang worldwide, and probably the rest of his life.

So when I read, "I know he's just an innocent sweet darling 24-year old child actor who can't catch a break and is struggling to get a movie role, poor underappreciated fella!" I couldn't help but remember M. Night's comment and apply it to Rathbone. It's an interesting concept. Not only is he eternally Jasper now, but, if the casting holds, he's Sokka. I can just imagine, some years down the line, someone going, "Oh, you were Sokka! But... you aren't Asian... How did that work?"

There are always controversies surrounding the choices actors make when they're struggling to catch their big break. Some people think those choices are inexcusable, despite the outcome, but others think that such choices were necessary in order to make it where they are now, and that the actors shouldn't be held accountable for what they had to do years ago. Regardless of either argument, I wonder how many actors have points docked off their reputations for making poor choices in the beginning of their careers? And I really wonder how they, the actors, feel about those choices, after all these years. And if, in studying different actors while trying to become one, any of the up-and-coming ones are considering the consequences, however minor, of their roles today.

Sorry for being a little off-topic, but I couldn't resist. :/

Edit: ...however minor or major.

I was momentarily thinking of just the movie industry where a faux pas like this would mean little so long as the movie and merchandise sold well. The fans, however, would consider it a major blunder. ;) Obviously.

Also, I'm in the midst of compiling a pretty lengthy image post of yellow-(and otherwise just Asian)-face in Hollywood over the decades. Just because wow, this is so not an isolated, and therefore NOT inoffensive, situation.

Seriously, I want to see people like the cast-defenders and Rathbone react with this kind of frivolity had the source material been a fantasy!African canon. Seriously.

And incidentally, surely someone has brought up already that if Rathbone is supposed to be evidence of cashing in on the "Twilight" craze, it fails. Because the actor who played the main character's Native American BFF is:

1) infinitely more popular than the character Rathbone played, not the least because of his greater character role in the books but also the character totally had actual SCREENTIME and SPEAKING LINES
2) a far more appropriate 16 years old
3) being considered for replacement for his role in the later Twifilms (where the character becomes all serious and rapey), because it was thought he came across as too much of a cheerful jokester type of every!guy. Gosh, that doesn't sound like Sokka at ALL...

I just read it - thank you for the link! - and then discussed it over a length of time with my sister (who's ten times more educated/aware of social issues than I am). I was unsurprised to discover she wrote a letter to the paper about some of the points brought up...she writes a lot of angry letters, ehehehe.

But I did find the essay to be like. It was almost like a Racial Issues 101 for people who've never had to encounter racial issues before/are in great denial racism exists. Y'know? Because it cushions the racism. I think to peeps like you and I, it's like "Duh of course"; but the fact that it bounces back and forth between white grievances and minority rights, it seemed to say "Look, you're Caucasian and you may be rich or poor, but here's how it looks for the rest of America."

Anyway, the only thing I really objected to (and I can't help but wonder if it was taken out of context and therefore how MUCH of the quotes were taking out of context?) was the whole "It's hard to blond haired blue eyed actors to get a job now, poor babies! Even this Hispanic marketing firm agrees with us!

I did find the case of United States v. Bhagat Singh Thind interesting. There are some good quotes in that article, despite its many problems.

I'm not really fanatical either (and I hope I don't come off that way! Yikes), it's more that I enjoyed the show for celebrating and respecting Asian cultures; now it's all going to hell and it kinda hurts.

Nawww, bebe! <3 <3 What amazes me is that MTV didn't think it would be wise to edit out that portion of the interview - so they think it's perfectly okay for an actor to say "I'll get a tan" to play another race? Incredible.

I'm actually all BLAH about his comment. Like, it was incredibl insensitive, but he didn't mean it. So I'm sure eh's not intentionally racist. He just doesn't know what he's saying. At all.

Couldn't he have atleast talked about the racism issue. Maybe sympthasized with fans, and then said he'd do his best to be Sokka?

Either way, this is just another stupid comment that I'm gonna ignore. Hard to do, but it's possible. Instead I shall try and be happy that he's an Avatard.

You know....I can't see why they can't replace him. He'll still get plenty of publicity as a ****** beyootiful sparkly Cullen******.

Let's get back to sending our letters and making this issue known. If anything, this is just another oppurtunity to prove our point.

Idiot Hollywood.

His quote was featured on Racialicious, as well as Angry Asian Man (it was crossposted): http://www.racialicious.com/2009/01/22/avatar-get-a-tan-become-asian
