Also, I feel like a total wretched cad for my last post. Hey Glock, let's see how sad and unhappy you can make people about their art! It isn't enough for artists to beat themselves up constantly over their art skills, I think it'll be better to create a public forum over which to self-flagellate. Yeah. Isn't that a GREAT idea? GOOD JOB, WINNER.
In order to correct my heinous mistake, I'm turning this post into a Fanart Love Meme of sorts. Oh wait --
Fanartist Love Meme
There, that's better.
THE RULES
1) ARTISTS: Comment with your name and say why you love your own art/making art.
2) EVERYONE ELSE (artists and art-lovers)!! Reply to artists to add further why you love their art. This isn't a personal-love meme, it is ALL ABOUT THE ART.
3) PIMP! As my last post indicates, artists are delicate like puppies or kittens or puptins. Spread the love, instant karma; you know the drill.
I fully expect everyone who commented on the last post to comment on this one. FULLY. EXPECT. *looks stern and task-misstressy*
---------------------------------
Daily Band of Brothers
Only one this time, since I don't want to annoy anyone coming here for the meme. :D

glockgal!
Of course, I'll go first becauseI'm vain, it'll encourage others.I love my art! I do; it hasn't let me down so far and I love that it's given me a passion to notice and observe things IRL that non-artists might not even see.
I love that I have a mad need to learn and incorporate techniques and people's ideas and styles into my art. I love that I prefer using other people's ideas to draw from; that attitude guarantees that I can make my art into my profession.
Also, I love that people love the way I draw. I really, really, REALLY do. It makes me think I'm doing something right. Hurrah!

Re: glockgal!
I love how there's no other artist's work that looks like yours. You embrace your 'style' and I respect that above all else. You have a magic of expression and your style only enhances it.

I can draw things things that I would like to see, for instance, taking an incredibly hot actor in an historical drama who would never need a nude scene, but if the director ain't supplying, I CAN.
Equally take two straight young men and have them in an intense and erotic scene together.
Make costumes for JRockers that look good! Minus fringe and streamers and excessive sequins.
Hopefully help spread the love of black and white art! *waves banner*

Also, I seriously majorly respect you as an artist, and your artistic integrity. You are definitely a person I value to learn from.
And finally, YAY costume making!!! *HEE*

I like it because I'm actually seeing tremendous improvement in my work, from years ago.
I'm remarkably impatient when it comes to sitting down to do it, so me having learned to take the time, instead of just scribbling, is making a world of difference.

My favourite bit about my art? The sketchiness of it. Sure it looks unfinished (like it is a lot of the time), but for someone who has difficulty making her art pop, the lines and scribbles everywhere always make my art look more fluid than it does after I've cleaned it up. Sketchiness ahoy!

I love art. Period, I love looking at it, touching it, smelling it, occasionally tasting it (thank you tate museum!) and hearing it! I love being able to put feelings down on the paper and have that become an experience for someone else.
I love fan art because it's narrative and doesn't take itself to seriously. I can enjoy it without digesting it too much.
I love painting because it's a completely physical and emotional experience for me.
November 15 2007, 16:53:53 UTC 4 years ago
And I give you mad respect for being such an artist, not only in what you produce, but how you think, feel....everything. You have an energy that's mighty inspiring to others, I can tell you that!

Right now what I like about what I do is that it's fairly unique.
I like taking an idea, being able to graph it out on paper, and then work it up in yarn into something that can be displayed or used. I like that my meager abilities to graph an idea have evolved from just letters 10 years ago to more pictures. Even the style of the letters has changed...
And I LOVE how the true fanartists inspire me to create more things...

I don't think I'm that well known anymore since falling out of fandom, but that's okay. I like my art (usually). I like that I'm always willing to learn new things, and that everything I learn always settles back into my general style after a shakedown period. I like that I've learned how to erase, how to let go, how to redraw and be happy with it. I like that I've learned how to experiment and see things in new ways. There's lots of thing I want to do better, but overall, I'm glad that I can look back on 90% of my old stuff and still not cringe, not even if it was year ago.
November 15 2007, 18:01:35 UTC 4 years ago
Have I ever told you this? You were one of the Biggies on my list, when I was just creeping into fandom. I browsed Digital Midnight constantly for inspiration and admiration. I fell madly, deeply in love with that oh, so clean and precise line art you do (I think I've blathered on to you about this before, ahaha) and I still remember your art from Nanomango in...2004? 2006? I can't quite remember what year, but the art imprinted itself in my brain as something to aspire to.
That I had the honour and privilege to draw for you is like. AMAZING. I am so glad you are proud of your work and I really never ever want you to stop!!

I like the way I draw eyes, and hair, and arms. I'm pleased that I've been able to branch out into new mediums lately (Photoshop and markers, for example) and come out with something that I'm pretty proud of.

Erm... as for me, I like my art because it's shamelessly self-indulgent. I just draw what I like, which is basically pretty people (self-indulgence is also a drawback, of course, but I am focusing on the positive here XD), and I like my lines and the way I draw hair and how I always try to portray that there's intelligence behind the eyes and a story behind the face. I like sloppy but mysterious better than polished and empty of feeling.

I sometimes like the fluidity of my lines and the way I don't feel I need to do every detail to make a good picture. I <3 my interior drawings. That's about it. :)

I've not been drawing anything with regularity for a couple of years now, but I PLAN ON RECTIFYING THAT, LORI, I SWEAR. I WAS DOING BOOTILICIOUS SKETCHES LAST NIGHT! What I love best is that I can do portraits like nobody's business. I love that I can sit down and draw a face and get the proportions right and everything placed appropriately, and know just where shadows and highlights fall, and not even have to check. I would so love to be that confident with the whole body.
Also, I do pretty kick-ass noses, if I do say so myself.

I like how versatile my art style is - almost like I don't have a specific one (er, except that I've fallen into a bit of a rut that way lately, but eh...) I like my outdoor background, and the way I draw and color Harry's hair - it's fun. XD
As for why I love making art - er, I dunno. I always have. It's pretty and fun and my mind works much clearer in visuals than words. :) I like capturing the emotion and feel of a moment in images.

What I enjoy about my own art is that it keeps me constantly doing something. Even if it's just diddling around in a notebook in class, I can draw and feel accomplished, like I actually did at least one creative thing during my day. And I draw at least a little something just about every day of my life, so that's a good feeling! I also like that I can definitely trace an improvement in my art over the years. LiveJournal is so helpful for things like that. :)
This is the only icon I have of my own art. Hmmmmmm. Ahahahahahaha.

I guess another main thing that I enjoy is that even though I don't draw a lot, any finished drawing or doodle reminds me that drawing is simply a cultural technique that anyone can do, rather than some mysterious thing only super-dedicated people can manage. I mean, I always have these good intentions to practice more (which undoubtedly would be useful) but then I'm too lazy, yet even drawing just sometimes is useful, like being able to write in principle even if you don't produce an awesome novel or practice writing X thousands words a day to train your craft or something, drawing anything comes in handy for simple things, like drawing a pretty ornament on the wrapping paper or birthday card to personalize it. (I actually have this long rant about how basic textual literacy is expected, but it's visual equivalent is not, so that people get away with believing that they can't draw *at all*, which annoys me to no end, so um, I may have veered a bit off topic here.)
I also like the moment when I manage something that never worked for me before, and the rare zen state when I manage to concentrate just on drawing (though that happens more often during inking and coloring or calligraphy) that is just soothing, kind of like meditation or something.
November 15 2007, 20:16:56 UTC 4 years ago
Anyway! Your art? Man, there is like. It is hard for me to understand how some people seem to accomplish so many art styles so effortlessly, and you are one of them. To me, you have that perfect artist combination - you understand and grasp basic human illustrations, but then you take it further and add your style, whether it's cartoony, anthropomorphic, illustrationy, even emulating another person's style. That sort of flexibility is so admirable!

redpiratemel - art at artpirate
I had to do this meme because glock rules and all artists need to talk about why they love themselves. Especially when you start to not love your own art as much!I love my art because I get in that zone of creating something pretty that tells a story, and I've usually forgotten how amazing that zone can be. Everyone needs to feel it! Hmmm, I like the way I draw nudity, and play around with highlights and shadows. I love drawing hair, period. OH GOD NOW I WANT TO GO DO ART. I see your ulterior motive now, glockgal.

I really like the tones and shading you use in your colored art. :) And the only example that comes to mind is your Snarry romance comic, but I think you're great at executing comics, which is way harder than it looks. x__x Also, the fact that love hair totally shows. :D4 years ago

And as for fanart? Fanart taught me that it's not only ok for girls to love porn, but it's great! I've learned a lot about how to express eroticism, from the subtle to the filthy (although I'm still working on the latter.)

I like that it's always changing, getting better. Each doodle is a step forward, you know?
It's my thing that I do! I'm mediocre at best at pretty much everything else, but it makes me immensely proud that I have something I love that I'm good at, and on top of that, it's a way for me to describe the world I see, or the one inside my head or the cracked-out dream I had after eating too much cheese</strike>.
The doing of art is teaching me how to see and is a tool for understanding the world and in so doing, learning a lot about myself, the way I think and my instincts. Plus? It's fun. :D

I like my own art because I enjoy it, I enjoy the effort, I love to express myself and also to do things for other people. I love the fact that I am willing to try anything to see how it looks. I love that being an artist means that I get to meet all these other artists who are le awesome.

I also love that it's almost like my own little secret. People sorta know that I do fanart, but it's something that I can keep a bit closer to my chest. Not many people know that I also do oil paintings. Almost nobody knows that my default avatar is a 24"x30" oil painting that I did in college.
And the wands I carve... are another class of art altogether, and I can sell the wands without any fear of copyright infringement! :D

freckles42!I love making art because I love to take the chance to improve. The more I do it, the more I feel comfortable and confident posting it. I work as an artist for my job so I find fanart is a way for me to relax (I almost never draw human form for my job, so fanart is a constant challenge for me). Putting myself out there encourages me to improve my own craft so it falls somewhere within the standards and expectations of the fandom. It's also taught me a lot of patience when it comes to my art - which I normally do not have. Fandom has made me a better artist. I like getting the chance to explore different styles as I try to find my own voice.
I write and I draw, so I am always considering the story that goes along with each piece I draw - even if I never write it, I know it.
